Seattle Pedestrian Safety budget gets a boost
The 2008 budget for Seattle has a $3.5 million increase in funding for their Strategic Pedestrian Safety Initiative providing various pedestrian safety elements.
Today, with the backdrop of a staircase near Sanislo Elementary that is slated to be rehabilitated, Seattle City Councilmembers held a press conference to announce their Strategic Pedestrian Safety Initiative. This initiative increases last year's pedestrian budget by almost $3.5 million. During this budget season, Feet First lobbied the council for increases to the Strategic Pedestrian Safety Initiative and is pleased to see this new budget.
The budget (which is expected to officially be passed November 19th) includes the following:
- Mobility Education Foundation: $25,000
- 31st Ave Traffic Calming: $235,000
- Stairway Improvements: $250,000
- Speed Van: No new cost
- Pedestrian Infrastructure Pilot Program: $500,000
- Pedestrian Safety Education Campaign: $250,000
- Sidewalks: $1,500,000
- 3rd Ave Transit Corridor Improvements: $650,000
- Staffing for Neighborhood Safety Projects: no new cost
- City Attorney for Vehicular Assaults: $49,000
This increase funding for pedestrian safety and infrastructure shows promise that all of Seattle will one day be a place where pedestrians feel safe and welcomed. Though this will be a long process needing sustained commitment, this year's funding will help move us down that path.
