The High Cost of Free Parking
(University of Washington - Architecture Hall - Room 147, from
Mar 02, 2006 06:30 PM to
Mar 02, 2006 08:30 PM)
-
Seattle's Urban Sustainability Forum invites UCLA's Professor of Urban Planning, Donald Shoup. Shoup argues that the average parking space costs more than the average car and that whenever we shop, dine out, or see a movie, we pay indirectly for parking because its cost is included in the price of everything from hamburgers to housing. At this presentation, Shoup will demonstrate that free parking has other costs: it distorts transportation choices, warps urban form, and degrades the environment. Surprisingly, Shoup estimates that (1) if all U.S. parking spaces were combined into one surface lot, it would be the size of Connecticut; and (2) every year we spend as much to subsidize off-street parking as we spend for Medicare or national defense.

Mar 04, 2006 09:00 AM to
Mar 04, 2006 10:30 AM)

Feet First leads this walkability audit of the
Wildwood Park Drive area in the City of Puyallup. You are invited to be part of a walkability audit in Puyallup’s Wildwood Park Drive
neighborhood that will identify ways to make
the neighborhood more walkable.
Well planned communities encourage physical
activity as part of daily routine. All
communities can benefit from safer, more
inviting places to walk and bicycle.
This walkability audit will help identify problem
areas, and provide ideas about possible solutions.
The summary report can help the community get
funding to create better and safer places to
walk.

Jim Lazar, Consulting Economist from Olympia WA
On September 14, 2004 Olympia voters approved a referendum by a 57% to 43% margin for a 3% tax increase on natural gas, electricity, and telephone service to fund more parks and sidewalks. The success was largely due to a pedestrian group of concerned citizens named Walkable Olympian Neighborhoods (WON!). Jim Lazar, their leading advocate, will talk about their methods used to increase Olympia’s voter support for parks and sidewalks, and the possibility of achieving citizen support to pay for sidewalks in other communities around the state.

Street Scramble - U-District
(5031 University Way NE, Seattle, from
Apr 22, 2006 08:30 AM to
Apr 22, 2006 01:00 PM)
-
Street Scramble can be enjoyed by anyone who (a) can travel under their own power for 90 minutes – walking, running, biking, wheelchair, skating, or scootering, (b) can follow a street map, and (c) likes to explore.
When you arrive at Street Scramble, you will register (or check in, if you pre-registered). Then, at 9:30, you will receive a map with about thirty checkpoint locations circled. Each circle has a number between 10 and 99. The point value of the checkpoint is equal to its number rounded down to the tens; for example, checkpoint 35 is worth 30 points; checkpoint 12 is worth 10 points. You will also receive a question sheet with one question per checkpoint – see below.
You (together with your team, if you have a team) will then plan which checkpoints you will try to visit, and in what order. Your team will need to stay together at all times. You can change your plan as you go along, but it's very helpful to at least start with some kind of plan.
At 9:50 there will be a pre-Scramble briefing where the event director will review rules and safety.
At 10:00 the start will be announced, and you will head out to visit checkpoints. Again, your team must stay together at all times.
When you arrive at a checkpoint, there will be no sign or person to let you know you've found the right place. You will answer a simple question about the location, found on your question sheet, to prove you were there. All questions are multiple choice. For example, "What is the last word on the plaque next to the statue? (a) Arts (b) Commission (c) Space"
To participate in the 90 minute option, you must return to the event center by 11:30. To participate in the 3 hour option, return by 1:00. You can decide which option you want while you're out there. Returning on time requires planning!
When you return, we will score your question sheet while you enjoy lunch, included in your entry fee. After lunch, award ribbons will be given out for those with the highest scores in different categories.

There is no cost to attend this meeting, which is sponsored by the King County Board of Health, Public Health-Seattle & King County, and the University of Washington Exploratory Center for Obesity Research (ECOR) and Center for Public Health Nutrition.
Jim Sallis - renowned investigator and director of the Active Living Research program - will present the latest work emerging from the policies to promote evidence-based physical activity interventions. For more information about his work: www.drjamessallis.sdsu.edu/
In addition, we will hear the view from Olympia on upcoming policy work related to healthy eating and active living; and showcase effective programs in the areas of nutrition, physical activity and land use and the built environment showing success locally.
Workgroups on priority areas will provide attendees an opportunity to continue to play a role as think tank participants. We encourage you to bring along a project/program profile to share and to assist you with networking.
Feet First will lead a workgroup and participate in the response panel to the keynote presentation.
