Reclaiming a park(ing) space

page providing information on how to make a parking space.

So you would like to make a parking space...

People develop park(ing) day parks for many different reasons and with many different themes. Some want to reclaim public space for a park. Others want to express some local character and spice up the neighborhood. And others want to raise awareness of an important issue.

Putting together a parking space takes a little bit of planning and work. Feet First, Trust for Public Lands, and Seattle Parks Foundation are here to help you through. There are four easy steps:

1. Populate your park

Talk with friends and neighbors to let them know you want to make a park on Park(ing) Day. It is always fun to have people play in your park with you. Also extra hands to help never hurt.

2. Plot Your Park

Think of a neighborhood where you would like your park to be. In the city of Seattle, you will need some permits to rent the parking space. We can help with the permitting, choosing a location near important pedestrian issues and other parking spaces in your neighborhood.

3. Plant your Park

What will your park look like? Think about a theme and materials to decorate your park. We will have some donated materials and Seattle Parks Foundation will have trees to rent.

4. Play in your Park

On September 19th, let the parks grow!
